We continued our tour of Rome today. After breakfast, we hopped on the bus and headed for stops at the Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore, the Colosseum (again but for those that didn't take the guided tour yesterday), the Spanish Steps, the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain and the Piazza Navona. All fantastic places rich with history and artwork.
The weather report this morning warned of a chance of rain. Boy, were they right! Luckily it happened as the days tour was concluding, but it began raining harder than Any one of us has ever experienced. It began with a few, very large drops. Then harder and harder until there was virtually no space between the drops. I doubt a fire hose could have soaked us any more. We all dashed for the bus back to the hotel, but by the time we climbed on board, everyone looked as though they had just emerged from a swimming pool with their cloths on. The accompanying wind had turned everyone's umbrella inside out long before we had reached the shelter of the bus so there wasn't a dry tourist to be found.
Dinner this evening was at the hotel as part of the tour. The best food we have found so far has been the pizza we found near the Vatican. Tonight's meal was a too undercooked risotto followed by, what I later found out, used to be a chicken but massively overcooked. I actually thought it thinly cut, over cooked pork chop. The meat (poultry?) was sitting over some broccoli that was so bland it tasted tinny. Desert was okay. Oh well, saved some calories and had nice conversations with some our traveling companions.
Tomorrow, we are on the bus early, leaving Rome and beginning our travels north.
